The History of Land Rover

Land Rover is an iconic British brand, which specialise in producing SUVs with excellent off-road capabilities. Owned by multinational car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) since 2008, Land Rover vehicles remain in high demand. However, with an extensive history dating back many years, Land Rover has seen many changes. Read on to find out more about the history of this luxury manufacturer.

Once upon a time...

Land Rovers first started being built in 1948 by the Rover Company as tough, off-road capable vehicles. Designed as the British version of the Jeep, the Land Rover was an exciting new addition to the market. The original Land Rover series models, including the Range Rover in the 1970s, became a huge success over a number of decades. By 1976 the millionth Land Rover was built, and business was booming. Then in 1978, Land Rover Limited was established as a subsidiary of the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BL).

Over the years, Land Rover has been owned by various companies, including BMW in 1994 and Ford in 2000. In 2008, both Jaguar and Land Rover operations were sold to Tata Motors, which is part of the Tata Group. Then in 2013, Tata Motors merged the operations of Jaguar Cars Limited and Land Rover, and Jaguar Land Rover Automotive PLC was established.

Military Vehicles

Several Land Rover models have been used in the military due to them being tough, rugged-looking vehicles. These vehicles were modified for military use, including the introduction of convoy lights, heavy-duty suspension and blackout curtains. Also, two Land Rover models were produced specifically for the military - the 101 Forward Control and the ‘Airportable’ 1/2 ton Lightweight. Military forces worldwide used Land Rovers, including the British Army, as they could manage driving over tough terrain.

Production

Land Rover vehicles are made at plants in various countries. The main factory is the Solihull plant in Solihull, UK. This site is 300-acres in size and has over 10,000 employees working there. As an advanced vehicle manufacturing plant, this is where a wide range of the company's vehicles are made. Also, the factory operates 24-hour production in order to keep up with demand. Like most vehicle manufacturers, Jaguar Land Rover experienced a large drop in global sales during 2020 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Although, despite a shaky start to 2020, sales figures for Q4 showed a recovery in sales which was excellent news. Jaguar Land Rover continue to develop and expand the range of electrified vehicles available, including Plug-In Hybrid Land Rover cars. Furthermore, Land Rover commercial vehicles are available in the Discovery and Defender models. As primarily work vehicles, these commercials are built for toughness and can handle all terrain.

Land Rover vehicles remain very popular lease options, especially as the demand for SUVs continues. With an excellent range of vehicles to choose from, the brand remains highly recognised and respected worldwide.
